Looking for a fun day out where you can get outdoors, support local growers and take home a basket of fresh, seasonal fruit? Fruit picking in Perth is a surprisingly fun way to spend a day, with farms and orchards around the city offering everything from strawberries and grapes to nectarines, plums and winter kiwifruit.

The best part is that there’s something different to pick throughout the year. Spring brings strawberry season, summer is all about grapes and juicy stone fruit, while winter offers the chance to get out into the Perth Hills for seasonal fruit picking.

So, if you’re wondering where to go fruit picking in Perth and what you can pick each season, we’ve put together our guide to some of the best local farms and orchards to visit.

Just remember that fruit-picking seasons can be short and are dependent on weather and growing conditions, so always check with the farm before heading out.

Where to Go Fruit Picking in Perth

There are fruit-picking farms scattered around Perth, with some of the biggest concentrations in the Swan Valley, Perth Hills and northern suburbs.

The fruit available changes with the seasons, so a farm that is open for picking one month may have finished for the year a few weeks later. We recommend checking each farm’s social media page before setting off to confirm that picking is open and that there is plenty of ripe fruit available.

From spring strawberries to summer grapes and stone fruit and winter kiwifruit, here’s when to go fruit picking in Perth.

Strawberry Picking in Perth

Spring is one of our favourite times for fruit picking in Perth, and strawberry picking is a great family-friendly option.

There are several strawberry farms around Perth where you can pick your own berries, particularly around Gnangara and Wanneroo, with some options south of the river too.

Our full guide to the best Strawberry Picking in Perth includes some of the farms we have visited, including Kien’s Strawberry Farm, My Strawberry Farm, Sue & Tim’s Fresh Farms, H&N Strawberries and Minh Tran’s Strawberry Farm.

Most farms operate on weekends during the strawberry season, with prices generally based around a pick-your-own box rather than a per-person entry fee. Some also sell pre-picked strawberries and other locally grown produce.

One of our favourite things about strawberry picking is that many farms allow you to enjoy a few berries as you pick – although you’ll want to save plenty for taking home!

The season can vary each year depending on growing conditions, so always check before visiting.

Grape Picking in Perth

When summer arrives, it’s time to head to the Swan Valley for grape picking in Perth.

The Swan Valley is around 30 minutes from the Perth CBD and is home to a number of vineyards and family-run farms offering pick-your-own grapes during the summer harvest.

Some of the farms we’ve featured include Swan Valley Fresh Fruit in Baskerville, Padbury Pickings in Herne Hill, Grapes on Swan in Henley Brook, Kafarela’s Vineyard and Swan Street Vineyard.

Depending on the farm and season, you may find red, green and black seedless grapes, and some locations also offer other seasonal fruit such as watermelon, rockmelon or figs.

Our top tip? Go early in the day during summer. It will be cooler, you’ll avoid some of the crowds and the grapes can be at their freshest. Bring water, sunscreen, a hat and suitable footwear, and check whether the farm provides picking equipment or if you’ll need to bring your own.

Summer Fruit Picking in Perth

If juicy stone fruit is more your thing, summer is also the perfect time for fruit picking in Perth.

The Perth Hills are particularly good for summer fruit, with several orchards producing peaches, nectarines, plums, apricots and other seasonal favourites.

Tony’s Summer Fruits, Carmel

Located in Carmel in the Perth Hills, Tony’s Summer Fruits is a great option if you’re looking to pick your own summer fruit or simply buy locally grown produce directly from the farm shed.

Depending on the season, you can find apricots, peaches, yellow and white nectarines, black and green plums, apples, pears, avocados, persimmons and figs.

The orchard and farm shed are generally open seven days a week from 9am to 4pm for sales and pick-your-own, with the picking season usually running from late spring through to early autumn.

Picking is generally charged according to the fruit you pick, plus a small entry fee per person.

It’s worth checking their Facebook page before you visit as the available fruit can change quickly depending on what’s ripe.

The Fruit Corner, Pickering Brook

Just 30 minutes from Perth in the Bickley Valley, The Fruit Corner is another great spot for seasonal fruit picking in Perth.

This family-run farm has been growing produce for more than 70 years and opens for pick-your-own experiences when the fruit is ready.

During summer, you may find Ruby Blood Plums as well as cherry tomatoes and Roma tomatoes available to pick. Apples are also grown on the farm and may become available later in the season.

One of the fun things about visiting The Fruit Corner is that you can taste the produce as you pick – and there is plenty more to discover at the farm shed, including locally grown vegetables, eggs, honey and homemade preserves.

You’ll find the farm at Bracken Road in Pickering Brook, and picking generally takes place on weekends when the season is underway.

S&R Orchard, Walliston

S&R Orchard is one of the Perth Hills’ best-known orchards and a popular destination for seasonal fruit picking in Perth.

During the summer fruit season, its Summer Fruit Picking Festival is a great opportunity to wander through the orchard and pick juicy yellow nectarines and plums straight from the trees.

The experience is about more than just fruit picking, with S&R Orchard often hosting seasonal events and family activities throughout the year. Depending on the event, you may find an animal farm, tractor rides, kids’ activities, food and coffee vans and live entertainment.

If you’re visiting with children, this makes it easy to turn a couple of hours of fruit picking into a full day out in the Perth Hills.

S&R Orchard is located at Halleendale Road in Walliston. As with all seasonal fruit farms, check their website or social media before visiting to confirm the current picking season, opening dates and fruit availability.

Winter Fruit Picking in Perth

Who says fruit picking is only a summer activity?

Winter is actually a wonderful time to get out into the Perth Hills for fruit picking in Perth, with some orchards offering pick-your-own persimmons and kiwifruit.

There’s something particularly wholesome about rugging up on a cool winter morning, wandering through an orchard and filling a basket with fresh fruit straight from the vines.

Our recent winter fruit-picking experience took us to a Perth Hills orchard to pick fresh kiwifruit, and it was a lovely way to spend a winter day outdoors.

Read our guide to the Best Winter Fruit Picking in Perth for more details on where to go and what to expect.

Winter fruit availability is limited compared with the warmer months, so this is definitely one where you’ll want to check ahead before making the drive.

Tips for Fruit Picking in Perth

Before heading out for a day of fruit picking in Perth, there are a few things worth keeping in mind.

Check before you go. Fruit picking is completely dependent on what’s ripe, so farms can open, close or sell out with very little notice.

Go early. This is particularly important during summer. Early mornings are cooler and generally more comfortable, especially if you’re bringing children.

Wear a hat and sunscreen. Many orchards and farms have limited shade, so come prepared for the weather.

Wear enclosed shoes. You’ll often be walking over grass, dirt, gravel or uneven ground.

Bring your own bags or baskets. Some farms provide boxes or containers, while others ask visitors to bring their own.

Bring water. Fruit picking can be surprisingly tiring, particularly under the Perth summer sun.

Follow the farm’s rules. Only pick ripe fruit and harvest what you intend to purchase. Be gentle with plants and vines and stay within the designated picking areas.

Don’t forget to taste! Many farms allow you to sample fruit while picking, but check the individual farm’s rules first.

Make a Day of Fruit Picking in Perth

One of the best things about fruit picking in Perth is that many of the farms are located in some of the city’s prettiest rural areas.

The Perth Hills and Swan Valley are perfect for turning a simple fruit-picking trip into a full day out. Stop for lunch at a local café or winery, browse a farm gate shop, explore the surrounding countryside or pick up some extra local produce to take home.

And if you’re visiting with kids, fruit picking is a great way to get them outdoors while showing them where their food actually comes from.

Whether you’re filling a box with strawberries in spring, wandering between grapevines in summer or picking kiwifruit on a crisp winter day, fruit picking in Perth is one of those simple local experiences that is hard not to enjoy.

Just remember: seasons are short, so if you see that your favourite fruit is ready for picking, don’t wait too long! There’s always something new in season.

Fruit availability, prices, opening hours and picking conditions can change throughout the season. Always check directly with the farm before visiting.
